Restoration Chilean mural 'Chile Vencará'

A Chilean mural 'Chile Vencará' on Osdorpplein has been recovered after demolition work and is being restored after 41 years. The artwork was discovered during preparatory construction work in 2018 for the new construction project The Hub (93 homes, the new "Stadsloket" and office of the municipality of Amsterdam Nieuw-West and a commercial plinth). The work appears to have been created in 1981 by Jorge Kata Núňez and the Chilean artist collective Brigade Ramona Parra. The mural has been applied to the wall of the adjacent Kroonenberg Groep building where Saakouk is located. The restoration is made possible by MRP, Kroonenberg Groep and the municipality of Amsterdam.

Mural discovered

The discovery in October 2018 of the mural 'Chile Vencerá' was a big surprise. The work is in the style of the Chilean artists' collective, which expressed its ideologies through murals. After a long search for the provenance of the artwork, the Center for Visual Arts (CBK) was able to confirm that Jorge Kata Núñez, a Rotterdam artist of Chilean descent, is the creator. It is very special that this mural has been preserved and is now being restored.

Restoration

On Monday 11 July, the artists Jorge Kata Núñez and Juan Heinsohn started the restoration of the mural. This is expected to be completed by . The mural will be included in the corridor between the new-build project and the new municipal office of the municipality of Amsterdam Nieuw-West. The mural cannot be viewed at the moment due to the latest construction work. The relocation of the city counter and district office will take place at the end of this year. MRP, Kroonenberg Groep and the Municipality of Amsterdam are now making it possible for the artwork in the new city counter to be visible to visitors and interested parties. Because the mural is located in a non-public area of the new city counter, a special view has been made in the wall. This way everyone can admire the artwork later.
